FAQs
Can I put animation or sound in an email?
The standard on the web for delivering animation is Flash, but, despite obvious similarities, an HTML email and a webpage should not be treated the same. Email software clients are typically more limited in functionality than a web browser and you should not assume users' software will be capable of displaying Flash content. Additionally, even if they are technical capable of displaying Flash, there may be security implications of sending them Flash content. For example, the default setting in Outlook 2003 will throw an ActiveX security warning at any email containing Flash.
If animation is a must, try using a small animated gif though you should consider the users available bandwidth when creating such a file. Alternatively, put your content on a webpage and link to it from your email, thus giving users a choice about whether they view it or not.
Sound in emails is a similar story to animation. Flash is perfect for delivering this on the web, but, for the same reasons outlined above, is not a good idea for emails. Other methods of delivering sounds, such as client side scripting with JavaScript, are an even bigger problem. Any kind of intelligent client side scripting virtually guarantees your email being flagged a potential virus threat.
Can I put Flash content in my emails
Unfortunately, Flash content in an email is a non-starter.
Most email clients will not render Flash at all. Sometimes the result is even worse, for example Outlook 2003's default settings throw a security alert with Flash being incorrectly identified as an Active-X security problem.
The same applies for other client-side content such JavaScript, Java, and VBScript. We would advise putting this kind of content on a web landing page linked to from the email.
